Leona was born in 1915 in Spencerville, Ontario a daughter of Leonard & Ella (Cook) Prosser. She came to this country at the age of six, when her father purchased a dairy farm on the Heuvelton Road. She had never seen a paved road, and while being driven to her new home in the rain, she exclaimed, “Oh, the roads in this country are made of glass”.

She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy, and after teaching for a brief period at a small school, she became office manager for the Dairy Farmers Union, and helped organize two state-wide milk strikes in 1938 & 1941. She later worked for the city Chamber of Commerce operating the tourist information bureau, near what is now the city marina.

She was the widow of Eric C. Gordon, a prominent Ogdensburg attorney. A first marriage to Archie Wright ended in divorce.

She enjoyed gardening and landscaping, especially the three acres around her house with shrubs and perennials, reading, following the latest politics and business, and was a life long supporter of the Ogdensburg Public Library.
