Biography

Graveside services for Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Mary S. Lawrence age 96 a resident of the United Helpers Nursing Home and formerly of Pennsylvania will be held in the spring at Flackville Cemetery in Lisbon with full military honors.

There will be no public calling hours. Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence passed away on Tuesday (Feb 23, 2010) at the United Helpers Nursing Home. Arrangements are with the Fox & Murray Funeral Home.

Surviving is a nephew Lawrence F. Worden Sr. of St. Petersburg, FL; special friends Marie Bothe & Jim Farnsworth of Pennsylvania and Ann Daniels of Lisbon; several great-nieces & nephews and the United Helpers Nursing Staff on all shifts.

She was predeceased by a sister Dorothy Lawrence.

Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence was born on January 24, 1914 in Lisbon, NY a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles H. Lawrence. She graduated from Lisbon Central School in 1936 and received a scholarship to the School of Physical Therapy, Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC. She then went to Pearl Harbor as a civilian until the surprise attack from the Japanese and immediately enlisted and taken as 1st Lieutenant. She enlisted in the US Army where she stayed for four years stationed in Washington DC and put in charge of documenting the wounds and treatment of wounded soldiers during WWII. After receiving her honorable discharge, she attended Baruch Center of Physical Medicine Medical College in Richmond, VA where she received her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy and later received her Doctorate degree in Education while living in Denver, CO. She joined the Humanistic School Study Group in Wynne, PA, where she help found a Right Action School for the children of members in the group. She continued teaching there until the children were graduated.

Mary traveled extensively throughout her career and enjoyed visiting with her friends and family.
